Interior House Painting Brooklyn Wellington

← Back to Blog

Brooklyn's heritage villas come with features you don't see in newer homes — high stud ceilings, ornate plaster cornices, native timber joinery, and original kauri floors. Interior painting here isn't just slapping colour on walls. Get it wrong and you flatten the character that makes these homes worth living in. We paint a lot of homes in this suburb and we understand what careful preparation and the right products do for a space like this.

Why Brooklyn Homeowners Choose Our Interior Painting

Heritage Detail Preservation

Cornices, ceiling roses, picture rails, and timber window surrounds need to be cut in cleanly and consistently — not buried under multiple sloppy coats. On plaster surfaces, we assess the substrate before we start. Hairline cracks get filled and sanded flush. Flaking paint from moisture ingress is cut back to a stable edge and primed before topcoats go on. The extra prep time shows in the final result, and it means the paint stays put rather than lifting again in two years.

Colour and Finish Advice for Older Proportions

High ceilings and large rooms respond differently to colour than modern low-stud interiors. We can advise on how sheens behave on textured plaster ceilings, which whites work with native timber tones, and how to use paint to distinguish architectural features without making them look heavy. You're not obliged to take the advice — but it's there if you want it.

Steep-Site Access for Equipment and Materials

Getting equipment and materials into Brooklyn properties can be a job in itself. Steep driveways, tight access paths, and multi-level homes add complexity. We factor this into our quoting and planning, so the job doesn't slow down once it starts. All our work is carried out under Registered Master Painters standards.

Our Interior Painting Process

Every job follows the same structured sequence:

  • Preparation — move or protect furniture, mask floors, cover fittings and glass
  • Surface repair — fill cracks and holes, sand smooth, spot prime bare plaster or timber
  • Ceiling first — one or two coats of ceiling white, cut in carefully around cornices
  • Walls — two coats to achieve full, even coverage
  • Trim and joinery — window surrounds, skirting boards, picture rails, door frames in semi-gloss or gloss as appropriate
  • Final check — walk through with you before we pack up

We use Resene paints. For heritage villa interiors we lean on their low-sheen washable finishes for walls and their waterborne enamels for timber joinery. Full details on our interior house painting service page.

Cost Guide

Interior painting costs depend on room sizes, ceiling height, surface condition, and level of detail work. As a general guide:

  • Single room: $800–$2,500
  • Whole house: $8,000–$25,000+

Heritage homes with high studs and decorative plaster detail typically sit toward the upper end of room rates due to the extra care required. Get a free on-site quote for an accurate figure.

FAQs

Can you paint around original plaster cornices without damaging them?

Yes. We cut in by hand around decorative plaster detail — no masking tape on fragile cornices that could lift old paint or chip edges. It takes longer but it's the only way to do it properly on original villa features.

What paint is best on old plaster walls?

On sound plaster we use a Resene low-sheen finish — it's durable, washable, and doesn't show every surface imperfection the way a flat paint does. Where plaster is porous or patchy after repairs, we apply a sealer coat first to even out absorption.

How long does a full interior take?

A standard three-bedroom villa interior takes four to six days depending on condition and scope. Larger homes with extensive joinery and detail work take longer. We give you a timeline when we quote.

Do you move furniture?

We work around furniture where possible and ask that large pieces be shifted prior to us starting. We protect remaining items with dust sheets and take care around anything that stays in the room.
