Owner Occupied Residential
For Owner Occupied Residential Repaints, cover is automatic from date of practical completion up to $15,000 inc. GST.
Completion Certificate
Ask your contractor for the completion certificate with your final payment. This document activates your guarantee coverage.
Transferable
The Guarantee is transferable from a builder/developer or client to the next owner of a residence, adding value upon sale.
Protected If Contractor Closes
The cover comes into effect if your contractor is no longer trading for any reason, up to the value of the contract or $15,000 inc. GST.
5 Years Coverage

What does the 5-year guarantee cover?
The guarantee covers defects in workmanship such as peeling, flaking, cracking, or blistering caused by improper application. It applies to owner-occupied residential repaints up to $15,000 inc. GST automatically from the date of practical completion. It does not cover normal wear and tear, damage from external sources, or substrate failure unrelated to painting.
What voids the guarantee?
The guarantee may be voided if the homeowner makes unauthorised modifications to the painted surfaces, fails to maintain reasonable upkeep (such as allowing excessive moisture damage), or if damage is caused by external factors like storms, structural movement, or third-party interference.
Is the guarantee transferable?
Yes. The 5-Year Workmanship Guarantee is fully transferable from the original client or builder/developer to the next owner of the property. This adds real value when selling your Wellington home, as the new owner inherits the remaining guarantee period.
How do I make a warranty claim?
Contact Wellington Decorators directly with your completion certificate and details of the issue. If the contractor is no longer trading, contact Master Painters New Zealand who will assess the claim and arrange for remedial work by another Registered Master Painter, up to the contract value or $15,000 inc. GST.
What maintenance is required to keep the guarantee valid?
Homeowners should maintain reasonable upkeep including regular exterior washing (at least annually), keeping vegetation clear of painted surfaces, promptly addressing any water leaks or drainage issues, and avoiding physical damage to painted surfaces. These simple steps help maximise paint longevity and keep your guarantee valid.
How does your guarantee compare to other painters?
Our Master Painters 5-Year Workmanship Guarantee is backed by Master Painters New Zealand, not just our company. This means if Wellington Decorators were to cease trading for any reason, your workmanship is still covered — a level of protection most independent painters cannot offer.
Does the guarantee cover paint manufacturer defects?
No. The workmanship guarantee covers defects caused by our application. Paint product defects are covered separately by the paint manufacturer's own warranty. As we use premium Resene and Dulux products with their own comprehensive warranties, your project has dual protection — our workmanship guarantee plus the manufacturer's product guarantee.
What happens after the 5-year period?
After the 5-year guarantee period, your consumer rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 still apply. We also offer maintenance painting services and can inspect your property to advise on the best time for repainting to protect your investment long-term.
