Cannon Lane

The Cannon Lane project involved refreshing the exterior of a charming character home that required careful attention to maintain its heritage appeal whilst updating the colour scheme. The property's age meant dealing with various surface conditions, including areas of old paint build-up, some minor rot in weather-exposed sections, and the need to carefully prepare intricate architectural details without damage.

Character homes from Wellington's early twentieth century are full of detail that makes them worth preserving — decorative barge boards, turned veranda posts, deep soffits, and window hoods that give the house its personality. Painting these features well means understanding them architecturally. You don't rush the trim work on a home like this. Our team allocated extra time to the detailed joinery, working methodically from top to bottom so no fresh surface was walked past or marked by later scaffold movement.

We coordinated with a local carpenter to address minor timber repairs before commencing our painting work. The preparation phase was extensive, involving careful hand-scraping and sanding of all surfaces, treating bare timber with appropriate preservatives, and filling imperfections with flexible exterior filler. On the older sections of weatherboard where paint had built up over many coats across decades, we used a heat gun in conjunction with a scraper to lift the excess without gouging the timber beneath.

We selected Resene Lumbersider paint system, ideal for weatherboard homes, applying comprehensive primer coverage followed by two coats of premium topcoat. The homeowners chose a sophisticated heritage colour palette that respects the home's original character whilst giving it a fresh, well-maintained appearance. The colour choices were informed by period references — the tones we selected were common in Wellington residential architecture of the home's era, so the result looks authentic rather than costumed.

The project required patience and skill to achieve professional results on this older home, with our experienced painters taking particular care around detailed joinery and timber features. The transformation has revitalised the property's street appeal whilst ensuring excellent weather protection for years to come.
