Lohia Street

This classic weatherboard home on Lohia Street in Khandallah presented the perfect opportunity for a colour transformation whilst restoring weather protection to all exterior surfaces. The property's elevated position meant exposure to Wellington's prevailing winds and weather, which had taken their toll on the previous paint system with visible fading, chalking, and areas of paint failure.

Khandallah's elevation puts homes squarely in the path of Wellington's north-westerlies. Paint on the south and west elevations of this home had chalked badly — a classic sign of UV degradation that leaves a powdery residue on the surface. Chalked paint cannot simply be painted over; new paint won't bond properly to a chalky substrate and will peel within a season. We water-blasted the entire exterior at high pressure first, then wiped test patches with a dark cloth to confirm all chalk residue had been removed before proceeding with priming.

Our comprehensive preparation process included scraping and sanding areas of paint failure, filling cracks and gaps with flexible exterior filler, and treating any exposed timber with wood preservative. We then applied a complete Resene paint system: Resene Quick Dry primer on all bare timber, followed by two full coats of Resene Sonyx 101 in the homeowners' chosen colour scheme. The fresh colour palette transformed the home's kerb appeal whilst the premium paint system ensures years of protection against Wellington's challenging climate.

The homeowners had selected a confident charcoal for the body with a warm white trim — a classic combination on a traditional bungalow that looks contemporary without trying too hard. Getting those colour breaks sharp around windows and joinery takes time and care. We used fine-bristle brushes for all the cutting-in work rather than relying on masking tape, which leaves cleaner lines on uneven timber surfaces and saves the risk of tape pulling away old paint.

Particular attention was paid to proper preparation and painting of windows, fascia boards, and eaves where weather damage is most common. The homeowners were thrilled with their refreshed home and the care our team took to protect gardens and paving throughout the project.
