Haumia Street

The Haumia Street property is a classic New Zealand weatherboard bungalow that required comprehensive exterior painting to restore its traditional charm whilst providing modern weather protection. The home sits on a corner section with high visibility, making the quality of the exterior finish particularly important to the proud homeowners. Years of Wellington weather had taken their toll, with noticeable fading, chalking, and areas where paint had completely failed, exposing bare timber to the elements.

A corner section means this bungalow is observed from two street frontages simultaneously, and the homeowners were right to take the finish quality seriously. There's no hiding workmanship on a property with that much street exposure. Every cut-in line around windows, every fascia board edge, and every junction between body and trim colour is on display. That level of visibility actually motivates our team — it's the kind of project where you can take real pride in the result from the pavement.

Our work began with thorough preparation, including water-blasting to remove loose paint and contaminants, hand-scraping and sanding areas of paint failure, treating all exposed timber with preservative, and filling numerous gaps and cracks that had developed. We took particular care with the home's original features, including decorative barge boards and window architraves, ensuring these details were properly prepared and painted to highlight the home's character. Several of the original barge board details had fine cracks along the grain that needed flexible filler rather than rigid compound — rigid fillers crack again as the timber moves seasonally, whereas a flexible product moves with it.

The paint system consisted of Resene Quick Dry primer on all prepared areas, followed by two full coats of Resene Lumbersider in heritage colours that respect the bungalow's era whilst providing a fresh, well-maintained appearance. The trim colour — a warm off-white rather than a bright white — was chosen specifically to complement the period character of the home rather than creating a stark contrast that would feel anachronistic on a property of this age.

The finished project beautifully showcases this classic home's character whilst the quality paint system ensures excellent protection for years to come. The homeowners were delighted with the transformation and the respect shown to their home's heritage features.
