Can You Safely DIY Paint Stripping?
DIY paint stripping saves money but involves serious safety risks — toxic chemicals, lead exposure, fire hazards, and respiratory dangers. Understanding these risks and proper safety protocols is essential before starting any stripping project.
As Registered Master Painters who've safely completed hundreds of stripping projects, we've seen DIY attempts go wrong. This guide helps you work safely — or recognise when professional help is essential.
CRITICAL: Test for Lead Paint FIRST
Before ANY DIY stripping work, lead paint testing is mandatory. Pre-1980 Wellington homes typically contain lead paint. DIY lead paint removal creates serious poisoning risk for you, your family, and neighbours.
DIY Lead Test Kit ($15-30): Swab tests available at hardware stores. Instant results — swab turns pink if lead present. Test every surface you plan to strip.
Professional Lab Testing ($50-100): Most accurate method. Send paint chip samples to lab. Quantifies lead concentration.
The Rule: If lead paint is present, STOP. DIY lead paint removal is extremely dangerous and strongly discouraged by WorkSafe NZ. Contact professional lead removal specialists — the health risk isn't worth the cost savings.
Essential Safety Equipment (Non-Lead Paint)
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
1. Respiratory Protection (CRITICAL)
Minimum: organic vapour respirator (not a dust mask!), AS/NZS 1716 compliant, cartridges replaced as specified (usually every 8 hours use). Cost: $40-80 for quality respirator + $20-30 per cartridge set.
Why standard masks don't work: dust masks protect against particles, not chemical vapours. Paint stripper fumes pass straight through standard P2 masks.
2. Eye Protection
Required: safety goggles (not just glasses), sealed around eyes, chemical-splash rated. Paint stripper splashes cause serious eye damage — standard glasses leave gaps around the sides.
3. Skin Protection
Required: chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile minimum, butyl better), long sleeves and long pants (old clothing you'll discard), closed-toe shoes. Consider disposable coveralls for large projects. Paint strippers cause chemical burns — skin contact requires immediate washing but prevention is better.
4. Hearing Protection
Required for heat gun use (surprisingly loud), power sanding, or any mechanical methods.
Chemical Stripping Safety
Ventilation (CRITICAL)
Outdoor Work: Always work outdoors when possible. Position work area in open space. Work upwind of chemical fumes.
Indoor Work: Open all windows and doors. Use fans to create cross-ventilation. Work in smaller sections. Take frequent fresh-air breaks. Never work in an enclosed space. Some strippers produce carbon monoxide — adequate ventilation prevents dangerous accumulation.
Chemical Handling
Application: use throwaway brushes. Apply thick layer as directed. Don't overapply. Cover with plastic film to slow evaporation if recommended. During dwell time: leave the work area. Keep children and pets away. Scraping: use proper scrapers into disposable containers.
Chemical Storage and Disposal
Storage: original containers only, cool dry location, away from children and pets, never transfer to unlabelled containers.
Disposal: NEVER pour down drains (illegal, causes environmental damage). Collect all waste in sealed containers. Take to hazardous waste facility. Wellington: Southern Landfill accepts hazardous waste (fees apply). Check Wellington City Council website for collection days.
Heat Stripping Safety
Fire Prevention (CRITICAL)
Heat guns reach 500°C+. Old dry timber ignites easily. Paint can smolder then ignite hours later — many fires start after work has finished for the day.
- Fire extinguisher: Keep ABC-rated fire extinguisher within arm's reach. Know how to use it before starting.
- Clear work area: Remove all flammable materials. No drop sheets near work (can ignite).
- Work methodically: Keep heat gun moving constantly. Never leave hot heat gun unattended.
- Post-work inspection: Check for smoldering after finishing. Revisit work area 30 minutes later — and again 2 hours later.
Burn Prevention
Heat guns cause instant burns. Heat-resistant gloves, long sleeves mandatory, keep heat gun pointed away from body, put hot tools on fire-safe surface only.
Glass Breakage
Heat near windows can crack glass from thermal shock. Protect glass with wet cloth barrier. Don't direct heat at glass. Especially important with old single-pane glass found in heritage villas.
Wellington-Specific Safety Considerations
Wind and chemical exposure: Wellington's notorious wind can suddenly change direction, blowing chemical fumes back toward you even when you're positioned "upwind." On windy days, work indoors with cross-ventilation rather than outdoors. Never strip on days with winds over 20 km/h — fume control becomes impossible.
Heritage homes and lead: Wellington has one of the highest concentrations of pre-1940s housing stock in New Zealand. If you're in Thorndon, Mt Victoria, Aro Valley, Newtown, or Kelburn, assume lead paint is present until testing proves otherwise.
Coastal salt and old paint: In coastal suburbs, salt crystallisation under old paint layers creates additional hazards during stripping — the salt crystals become airborne during scraping. Respiratory protection is non-negotiable in areas like Island Bay, Seatoun, and Lyall Bay.
Temperature and chemical performance: Many paint strippers require temperatures above 10°C to work effectively. Wellington winters (regularly below 10°C) mean stripping products may not activate properly. Check product specifications — some require longer dwell times in cold weather.
Lead Paint: Why DIY is Dangerous
We Strongly Recommend Professional Removal. But If You Proceed:
Absolute minimums: no children under 6 in house during work, no pregnant women present, no pets in work area. P3 or P100 respirator (not P2, not dust mask). Disposable coveralls, gloves, shoe covers. Shower immediately after work. Bag and dispose of all clothing.
Containment: Seal room completely with plastic sheeting. Tape all seams. Cover floors with thick plastic. Create separate entry/exit to prevent tracking contamination through the house.
Method: Chemical stripping ONLY (no heat, no sanding, no scraping). HEPA vacuum all surfaces (regular vacuum spreads lead particles). Wet wipe everything multiple times. Assume lead contamination in entire room, not just stripped surfaces.
Disposal: Lead paint waste to hazardous waste facility only. Dispose of ALL equipment. Don't reuse anything.
Reality Check: Professional lead removal costs $80-150 per m² for good reasons — proper containment, safety equipment, certified disposal, experience to minimize exposure. Blood lead levels in adults cause cognitive and neurological damage at levels that produce no obvious immediate symptoms. DIY lead removal risks serious health consequences to save a few hundred dollars.
When to Stop and Call Professionals
DIY is Too Risky If: Lead paint is present, project involves entire house exterior, second-storey work requiring ladders or scaffolding, heritage features you could damage, you lack proper safety equipment, poor ventilation conditions, tight timeline (rushing increases risk significantly).
Good DIY Candidates: Single interior door (non-lead confirmed), small furniture pieces, limited weatherboard sections (ground level, non-lead), window sills (confirmed non-lead), you have proper equipment and prior experience with chemical work.
DIY Paint Stripping Checklist
Before Starting:
□ Lead paint test completed (negative for DIY to proceed)
□ Organic vapour respirator purchased
□ Chemical-resistant gloves
□ Safety goggles
□ Protective clothing
□ Fire extinguisher (heat stripping)
□ Proper ventilation plan
□ Chemical disposal plan arranged
□ First aid kit accessible
During Work:
□ Wear all PPE throughout
□ Maintain ventilation
□ Take regular fresh-air breaks
□ Keep children and pets away
□ Monitor for headache or dizziness (stop immediately if these occur — they indicate chemical exposure)
After Work:
□ Proper waste disposal
□ Thorough cleanup
□ Shower and change clothes
□ Store or dispose of chemicals properly
□ Inspect for fire risk (heat stripping) — check again 2 hours after work ends
□ Ventilate area overnight
The Honest Cost-Benefit Assessment
DIY Saves Money: Professional stripping costs $60-120 per m². DIY materials cost $15-30 per m². Labour savings are significant on paper.
Time Investment: First-time DIY stripping: 3-5 hours per m² (vs 1-2 hours professional). A 150m² exterior could take 450-750 hours of DIY work across many weekends — that's months.
Quality Results: Professionals achieve better results faster with less substrate damage. Rushed or inexperienced stripping damages timber grain and creates surfaces that don't hold paint well.
Health Risk: Chemical exposure, lead poisoning risk, burns — weigh these against cost savings honestly. Treatment for chemical burns or respiratory damage costs far more than professional stripping fees.
Equipment Investment: Proper safety equipment, tools, and disposal costs add up. For a single-use project, the equipment investment may exceed the cost difference between DIY and professional.
