The Quetta Street deck staining project involved restoring a well-used family deck that had become grey, weathered, and was beginning to show early signs of timber deterioration from lack of protection. The homeowners recognised the importance of proper maintenance and wanted to restore their deck's appearance whilst implementing a protective system to prevent future degradation. This project demonstrates the importance of regular deck maintenance in preserving valuable timber structures.
The family had been on the deck every summer for years, and it showed — the high-traffic path from the door to the steps had worn differently from the rest of the surface, and the areas under the outdoor furniture were a different shade from the exposed boards. Getting a consistent result across a deck with that kind of differential wear requires understanding why the surface variation exists and preparing accordingly rather than simply cleaning and staining over the top of it.
Our restoration process began with thorough cleaning using timber-specific cleaning products that remove grey surface fibres and prepare the wood for stain penetration. After allowing adequate drying time, we lightly sanded the entire deck surface, paying particular attention to areas with minor splintering or roughness. The heavy-traffic sections received more intensive sanding to bring them back to a consistent level with the rest of the surface — this extra step ensures the stain absorbs evenly across the whole deck rather than producing a patchwork result. We then applied Resene Waterborne Woodsman, an environmentally-friendly water-based stain system that provides excellent UV protection and water resistance whilst allowing the timber to breathe. Two coats were applied to all horizontal surfaces, with additional coverage on high-wear areas such as steps and landing areas.
The water-based formulation of Resene Waterborne Woodsman also meant a much faster dry time than traditional oil-based stains, which was important for this family — their deck is a central part of their home's daily flow, and minimising the time it was out of use mattered to them. We planned the application to start early in the day and work with the direction of natural airflow across the deck to maximise drying conditions.
The deck was transformed from tired and grey to warm and inviting, with the natural timber grain beautifully enhanced by the quality stain. The family now has a deck that's not only attractive but properly protected against weather and wear. Regular maintenance staining every few years will keep this deck in excellent condition for decades. For professional deck staining that restores and protects, contact our experienced team.
