Western Lake Road

This expansive property on Western Lake Road presented a substantial exterior painting project with multiple levels, varied surface materials, and challenging access requirements. The home features a combination of weatherboard and plaster cladding, extensive decking, and detailed architectural elements that all required coordinated attention to achieve a cohesive, professional result.

A property of this scale doesn't suit a small crew working haphazardly — it needs a proper plan. Before scaffolding went up, we walked the entire exterior with the homeowners and mapped out a staging sequence: which elevations to complete first, how to manage weatherboard and plaster surfaces in adjacent sections without cross-contamination of products, and how to keep disruption to the main entry and driveway as brief as possible. The planning stage on a large project like this saves time and avoids costly rework later.

The project demanded careful planning and staging to address all surfaces efficiently. We erected comprehensive scaffolding to safely access all elevations and heights, then systematically prepared each surface type using appropriate methods. Weatherboard areas were water-blasted, hand-scraped, and sanded, whilst plaster surfaces received filling, sanding, and appropriate primers. We used a premium Resene paint system throughout, with Resene Sonyx 101 for weatherboards and Resene Lumbersider for timber elements. The colour scheme was carefully coordinated across all surfaces to create visual harmony whilst highlighting the home's architectural features.

The plaster sections of the home required particular care. Exterior plaster can develop fine map cracking over time — especially in Wellington's climate where walls expand and contract repeatedly through summer and winter. We applied a flexible surface filler designed for cement-based substrates, working carefully across each affected panel before applying a bonding primer. This extra step prevents the hairline cracks from telegraphing through the topcoat, which is especially noticeable in raking light conditions.

The scale of this project required our experienced team working efficiently over several weeks, carefully managing weather conditions to ensure optimal application. The homeowners were impressed with our project management, consistent quality across all surfaces, and the stunning transformation of their substantial property. For similar large-scale exterior painting projects, we bring the expertise and resources to deliver exceptional results.
