The Eye Institute Wellington required a complete interior refresh that would meet stringent healthcare standards whilst creating a welcoming, professional environment for patients. Working within a busy central Wellington medical facility presented unique challenges, including strict timing constraints to avoid disrupting patient appointments and surgical schedules. Our team developed a phased approach, completing one section at a time to ensure the clinic could continue operations throughout the project.
An eye clinic has particular demands that differ from a standard medical facility. Lighting is critical for clinical accuracy, which means wall finishes need to be consistent and non-reflective in examination areas — any texture variation or sheen inconsistency can cause distracting reflections under the specialist lighting rigs used during procedures. We used a matte-finish ceiling coat and a carefully selected low-sheen wall product in the clinical spaces to meet this requirement.
We specified Dulux Wash&Wear with StainGuard technology for its exceptional durability and washability — critical requirements in a healthcare setting. The colour palette was carefully chosen to be both calming and professional, with softer tones in patient areas and crisp whites in clinical spaces. All paintwork was applied to meet Health Department standards, with particular attention to achieving smooth, easily cleanable surfaces that resist bacterial growth. The project included corridors, waiting rooms, consultation rooms, and the reception area, with each space receiving thorough preparation and multiple coats for a flawless finish.
Because surgical schedules ran Monday to Friday, we scheduled our heaviest preparation work — sanding and priming — on weekends when the building was unoccupied. This allowed us to keep dust and fumes to an absolute minimum during clinic hours. All drop sheets were sealed at the edges with tape to prevent fine dust from migrating into adjacent clinical areas where instruments and surfaces must remain sterile.
The Institute's management commended our attention to infection control protocols and the minimal disruption to their daily operations. The refreshed interior now provides patients with a more comfortable, modern environment whilst meeting all necessary health and safety requirements.
